Focus Groups save companies millions of dollars each and every single year. Plus, they give participants an opportunity to make quick cash! A Focus Group is a research method similar to an interactive and lively round-table discussion where participants gather to share personal opinions about particular products or services in order to help manufacturers and service providers create new products or improve existing ones. Often the groups will address topics that represent new products or services which will be introduced in the near future. Focus Groups are very similar to surveys, except they are more detailed and take more time to complete and that's why they pay more than "standard" surveys. Imagine being paid $175 an hour to eat and comment on a bowl of beans. How about $200 an hour to eat and comment on a deli sandwich. Your time is more valuable than what you think. Right now, our Focus Group sponsors are currently paying up to $600 per study and each study session lasts anywhere from 30 minutes up to 4 hours.

What Is A Focus Group?

A "Focus Group" is a group of individuals selected and assembled by researchers to discuss and comment on, from personal experience, the topic that is the subject of the research. Focus Groups are just like Surveys; you simply share your opinions and discuss them with others.

Why do companies use Focus Groups?

The proponents of Focus Group Research believe it to be an excellent way to discover the attitudes of customers, prospects, consumers and other target groups relative to a wide variety of different topics.

Why do people participate in Focus Groups?

There are three main reasons why people participate in Focus Groups.

  1. One reason is to earn extra money; participants are generally paid with cash only, immediately after the session ends. The amount they are paid is usually a set amount which is commensurate with the length of the study.
  2. Another reason people attend Focus Groups is because they like to give their opinions about various topics. They also find it interesting to meet and chat with peers about subjects of interest.
  3. The third reason people attend focus groups is to learn about the research technique or the topic being discussed. Focus Groups can be very helpful to people who are seeking information about a particular subject. Many businesses and medical professionals attend focus groups to help them keep up with new developments in their field.

What can I expect during the Focus Group session?

The Focus Group will consist of a moderator which is a research professional, and 8 -10 or more participants  who all share common traits, experiences, or characteristics. The moderator will direct the discussion to explore a variety of issues related to the topic being researched. The moderator may expose stimuli, such as new products, advertising ideas, promotional concepts or new packaging and then elicit opinions from the group.

Will any one try to sell me anything.

No. A Focus Group is not about selling, nor is it a sales meeting. No company that we send you to sign up with, will ever try to sell you anything before or after a meeting.  That would totally defeat the entire purpose of the research.

 Where are Focus Groups held?

Focus Groups are held in face-to-face meetings, online via special communications like chat systems, teleconferencing, video conferencing, online bulletin boards, or various forms of tele/web conferencing.

How long is a typical online focus group session?

The average group lasts between 60 and 75 minutes. In the online format, there is no need for participants to wait until someone else completes their response before commenting. Instead, as soon as a question is posed everyone can begin typing at once. Not only does this reduce the occurrence of "group think" where one participant's strong opinion overpowers others in the room, it also reduces the time needed to cover the same content while increasing the breadth and depth of feedback.

Do you have any advice to help me be a better participant?

Yes! Utilizing the information below will help you be a better participant.

Be honest: Be sure to always give honest input and answer questions based on your personal feelings as the research objective is to learn how you feel personally about the topic being discussed.

Be yourselfThe best way to answer questions is honestly.  If you don’t, it will usually be revealed early on in the session and you may be asked to leave. Also, when responding, don’t try to give answers that you think the moderator or the group wants to hear. Give answers based on your own personal feelings of the product or service being researched.

Be responsive – Your ideas and impressions are important, so the moderator will want to hear what you have to say.  Feel free to express your opinion and participate as wall flowers are not always helpful in Focus Group sessions.

Don’t Be TOO responsive – Your input is important, but so are the views of other participants so be responsive but give others a chance to be heard as well.
